Building a Bonsucro Certified Supply Chain for Eco-Friendly Packaging

Building a Bonsucro Certified Supply Chain for Eco-Friendly Packaging

To meet the growing demand for environmentally responsible packaging, a new initiative is bringing together buyers, Fairagora Asia, and sugar mills to build a fully Bonsucro certified supply chain. This effort ensures that all used in packaging comes from certified sustainable sources, while also creating long-term economic opportunities for farmers and encouraging responsible, climate-conscious farming practices.

Building Capacity for Sustainable Farming Practices

To achieve a fully Bonsucro Certified supply chain, Fairagora Asia has implemented targeted capacity-building programs and technical training sessions for farmers. These workshops are instrumental in equipping farmers with the knowledge and tools necessary to meet Bonsucro certification standards, bringing more producers into the sustainable supply chain. These tools are vital for Bonsucro certification. More than that, they help farmers make better decisions.

Through targeted training, farmers are deepening their understanding of Bonsucro standards and resilient practices. They gain practical knowledge that prepares them for certification. As they adopt what they learn, sustainability is becoming a natural part of their farming routines. Improved farm activity records help farmers track fertilizer use, chemical applications, and safety measures. This allows farmers to make better decisions that reduce environmental impact and support more sustainable cultivation. The transition is not only about compliance but about building resilient and sustainable farming practices.

Beyond agronomy, the project places strong emphasis on financial literacy and operational planning. Farmers are introduced to farm financial recording notebooks, practical tools for tracking inputs, expenses, and yields systematically. These notebooks are not only essential for Bonsucro certification but also empower farmers to manage their operations like businesses..

By adopting better financial practices, farmers improve their business resilience and long-term viability, contributing directly to SDG Goal #8 – Decent Work & Economic Growth. by promoting decent livelihoods and financially resilient farm enterprises. Importantly, these skills also prepare farmers to respond more agilely to future changes in markets, climate, and certification requirements, such as Bonsucro certification.

Optimizing Fertilizer Application through Soil Testing

A key technical practice being promoted is soil testing, an essential component of the Bonsucro Certified standards. Rather than relying on generic recommendations, soil analysis provides insight into nutrient levels, allowing for more precise, efficient applications. This reduces unnecessary spending, improves yields, and helps preserve soil quality over the long term.

Training sessions offer step-by-step guidance on how to collect soil samples, interpret results, and implement targeted fertilization strategies. Portable soil testing kits are also introduced to encourage field-based analysis. These tools enable immediate feedback, empowering farmers to make timely decisions tailored to their unique soil conditions.

As a result, this approach contributes to lower greenhouse gas emissions and improved soil health, aligning with SDG Goal #13 – Climate Action. In addition, the farming notebooks incorporate climate action strategies, helping farmers document soil conditions and adjust their farming methods accordingly.

Driving Sustainable and Transparent Supply Chains

This initiative is a major step toward a more sustainable and transparent farming future. By fostering collaboration across the supply chain and supporting farmers with practical, high-impact solutions, the program ensures that Bonsucro Certified becomes more than a label; it becomes a pathway to resilience, environmental sustainability, and inclusive economic growth.

These practices benefit both the environment and the economic prospects of farmers. Through initiatives such as capacity-building programs, financial management training, and soil testing, the project enables farmers to meet global sustainability standards. Moreover, it supports the long-term success of their farming operations.

Crucially, the initiative ensures that all by-products used in packaging are sourced responsibly, reinforcing broader efforts in climate mitigation and rural economic empowerment. Therefore, it makes a substantive contribution toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, turning global ambition into grassroots action.
